In India, around 700 BC, an Ayurvedic practitioner named Charaka wrote a medical treatise based on earlier medical texts. In this treatise, Charaka clearly described a plant called "gokshura" (Tribulus terrestris) with diuretic, aphrodisiac, tonic, rejuvenating, and strengthening properties. Later, Chinese medicine added to the knowledge of Tribulus terrestris and named it "the herb that extinguishes wind and stops tremors." In China, "wind" corresponds to cardiovascular diseases: strokes, hypertension, etc. More recently, in 1847, a scientist named Fritzsche isolated a chemical molecule called "Harmine" from Peganum Harmala. This harmine is one of the active compounds of Tribulus terrestris and is used as a stimulant and aphrodisiac. On the other hand, explorers in South Africa discovered that ingesting plants containing harmine affects the mind and consciousness. Subsequently, studies were conducted to discover the many molecules contained in Tribulus terrestris and to determine the actions of this plant.
A 2014 study showed that Tribulus increased sexual desire in women with frigidity, without side effects. That same year, a meta-analysis and a clinical study indicated that Tribulus Terrestris did not increase testosterone levels or contribute to the resolution of erectile dysfunction.
